Idul Fitri in West Sumatera

Idul Fitri is a big day of Islam. It is a special event and celebrated by all Muslims in the world. It is as victory celebration for Muslims after 1 full month fasting. It falls on 1 syyawal every year. The Minister of Religion usually stipulates 1 syyawal based on the appearance of the "Hilal" as a sign of the end of Ramadhan.
Before Idul Fitri comes, the nomads from the city usually travel to their respective hometown. It's called mudik. In west Sumatera, many young people to adults do "Balimau" tradition. Balimau is a bathing bath tradition. They do it on the rivers or lakes crowdedly with their family, friends or buddies.
In the day of Idul Fitri, people in West Sumatera also doing Eid Prayer like other regions in Indonesia. They do it in the nearest square or masque. Eid Prayer is a prayer in Idul Fitri day that the law is circumcision. It consist of 2 rakaat, which the first rakaat preceded by 7 takbir and the second rakaat preceded by 5 takbir.
The thing done after prayer is to pay Zakat Fitrah. This is mandatory for all Muslims who practice fasting. Zakat Fitrah can gived to someone who still have blood relation with us or someone else. The amount is about 3,5 liters or 2,7 kilograms of staple food.
After prayer and pay Zakat Fitrah, Muslim's in West Sumatera will visit their family to "Silaturrahmi". They may bring typical food of West Sumatera such as rendang or lemang. It has become the characteristic of Idul Fitri in West Sumatera in term of culinary.
